Mitsubishi Outlander : IN AND OUT

Car And Driving - Choosing a Mitsubishi Outlander is a good deal less outlandish these days. Andy Enright explains whyIf Mitsubishi's Outlander is a compact Freelander-sized 4x4 you've never come across, then you're not alone. Not many people bought the first generation version but that should change with the latest model we're looking at here. Unlike its predecessor, it looks great and, even more significantly, comes with advanced diesel power. It seems this is a car we should now be paying attention to.First shown in Europe at the 2006 Paris Show, the `Outlander-Concept' gave some unsubtle hints as to what we could expect from a production-ready vehicle. Pride of place went to a diesel engine developed by Volkswagen, the 1,968cc, turbocharged and intercooled, DOHC, 16-valve, EU-4 compliant powerplant which might also be familiar to Mitsubishi customers as it's fitted to the Grandis Di-D people carrier. Mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, it produces 138bhp, 310Nm of torque and is good for a top speed of 116mph. If that's not quite enough, there's also a 2.2-litre DI-DC unit available. This one's a common-rail injection engine sourced from Peugeot that produces 154bhp. Torque is measured at 380Nm and the top speed is 124mph. Petrol-fanciers have a 2.4-litre automatic option. The two diesel engines allow Mitsubishi to tap into the 67 per cent of potential customers who want a diesel engine in a 4x4 instead of targeting the 23 per cent who prefer something that drinks from a green pump. The 158bhp 2.4-litre MIVEC engine isn't a bad unit per se but it certainly likes a drink especially with the standard automatic gearbox marshalling its power. The 2.0-litre diesel will return combined economy figures in the region of 42mpg and the 2.2-litre manages 38mpg but you'll be lucky to get 30mpg from the petrol. Quite what Mitsubishi were thinking when they signed off the final design for the original Outlander is open to conjecture but it would nevertheless have been intriguing to see what the company rejected. The latest car is a far cleaner, less extreme design than the first Outlander and will sell better as a result. Plugging straight into the main vein of the fastest growing 4x4 segment in Europe, the Outlander is a crucial vehicle for a company that's following a roadmap back to profitability. The total sales for vehicles of this type across Europe were 325,000 in 2001 and are now standing at just over 500,000 units with growth estimated at a further 35 per cent between now and 2009. Going head to head with the likes of the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V is an unenviable task but Mitsubishi is confident that the hardware is now in place."It seems this is a car we should now be paying attention to…."There are definite RAV4 design cues about the Outlander, especially around the rear pillars, but it has to be one of the best looking cars in its class now - composed and athletic where its predecessor was boxy and wilfully weird. The rising window line gives it a dynamic stance while the front grille is a whole lot happier looking, conforming to Mitsubishi's so-called `Mount Fuji' family look. I didn't come up with that name, by the way. For the off road stuff, Mitsubishi can call on seventy years of 4x4 heritage so the engineers should know what they're doing. The All Wheel Control (AWC) technology utilised by the Outlander forges a closer link between the four-wheel drive system and the Active Stability Control program, so that it will switch smoothly from two wheel drive (for better fuel economy on road) to a locked four-wheel drive mode when it gets really slippery underfoot. The transition is controlled by the driver by means of an illuminated dial between the two seats. Lacking the heavy-duty transfer case of vehicles like the Shogun, the Outlander is sensibly equipped for its target market and aims to offer a car-like ride. Mitsubishi has worked at developing an optimal compromise between the ground clearance and raised seating position of a proper 4x4 and a low centre of gravity that makes a car handle well on road. One of the tricks the company has used to achieve this end is to fabricate the roof panel entirely of lightweight aluminium - a trick borrowed from the Lancer Evo. The Outlander certainly seems to offer plenty of versatility. At 4640mm long, 1800mm wide and 1680mm high (1720mm with roof rails), it casts a smaller shadow than many traditional family estates, while still offering a  spacious and well proportioned five-seater cabin with decent head, leg and shoulder room. A split tailgate, capable of supporting 200kg, provides easy access to the large and regularly shaped 541-litre boot, which can be extended to a vast 1691-litres with the second row of seats folded away. The interior nominally seats five but the "HideandSeat" system pops an additional bench seat up from below the cargo bay floor to provide occasional seven-seat versatility, although, if you're looking for a car that's going to seat seven on a regular basis, I'd counsel going for something that's got a bit more wheelbase about it. There's also a clever second row Auto-Folding seat function. Operating a switch on the side of the luggage compartment causes the backrest to fold down, the seat to slide forward and then the whole assembly to tumble forward. There's no need to wrestle with head restraints and fiddly catches anymore. Plus there are also utility bars for attaching a variety of accessories and three 12v power outlets. The Mitsubishi Outlander model line-up starts with the Equippe, which comes with twin front airbags, air conditioning, keyless entry, six-speaker CD/MP3 player, ASTC Active Stability and Traction Control safety system, electric windows and mirrors, plus a rear spoiler as standard. Next up is the SE with 18" alloys, Bluetooth, cruise control, privacy glass, side and curtain airbags and a third row of seats. For those who want a little bit more luxury, the GSE has all of the above, with the addition of leather seats and a rear ceiling mounted DVD player, for an additional cost of £1,500. At the top of the range, the Elegance model includes heated leather seats, a sunroof, satellite navigation complete with its own 30GB music server and hard disc drive for high speed data access, a DVD player and a nine-speaker 650W Rockford FosgateTM Premium Sound System. The 2.2 DI-DC engine is offered only in even plusher Diamond trim, a level which leaves nothing to the imagination. The old Outlander was a decent vehicle hobbled by a couple of key shortcomings. This time round, Mitsubishi looks to have hit the bullseye. The company still needs to address the challenge of attracting footfall through dealerships but, to coin a phrase, `if they build them, you will come'. Here's hoping.Facts At A Glance CAR: Mitsubishi Outlander range PRICES: £19,999-£27,999 - on the road INSURANCE GROUPS: 10-13 CO2 EMISSIONS: 174-222g/km PERFORMANCE: [2.0] 0-60mph 10.8s / Max Speed 116mph FUEL CONSUMPTION: [2.0] (urban) 33.6mpg / (extra urban) 51.4mpg / (combined) 42.8mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD, AWC WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/With/Height [exc roof rails] 4640/1800/1680mm

Mitsubishi L200 Longbed : LENGTH COMMANDMENT

Car And Driving - Need more space in your pick-up. The Mitsubishi L200 Long Bed could be the answer. Steve Walker reportsBy the time you've put a double cab body onto your pick-up, the load bed isn't what it used to be. The Mitsubishi L200 Long Bed helps to address this problem by offering a 18cm extension to the standard load bed. Go for one of the higher spec derivatives and there's an extra 42bhp as well, to help with whatever you're carrying. The pick-up truck came of age in the UK market when somebody had the brainwave of installing an extra row of seats. With the resulting double cab bodystyle, one vehicle could accommodate up to five work colleagues or family members as well as a sizable load. Of course, something had to give and the load capacity in a double cab truck isn't quite as sizable as it is in the equivalent single cab model. Now Mitsubishi has partially addressed this with the L200 Long Bed. It's a double-cab with more space in the rear and some extra power thrown in for good measure. It would be no exaggeration to say that Mitsubishi has had much to do with the pick-up's meteoric rise to prominence on these shores, sales in a sector dominated by their L200 growing by 347% in the six years leading up to the end of 2004. In more recent years though, their current generation model has had to face up to tough competition from Toyota's HiLux, Ford's Ranger, Isuzu's Rodeo and Nissan's Navara. It's still a big player but rivals are catching it up: hence, in recent times, a series of improvements of which the powerful Long Bed version with 18cms of extra loading capacity is perhaps the most significant. There are a number of different power outputs available with the L200's various configurations but every model uses the same sturdy 2.5-litre common-rail diesel engine. In the plusher Long Bed derivatives, the engine's output is pumped up to the highest level of any other model with a muscular 176bhp on offer. Pick-up trucks don't get much more powerful than this and the Long Bed model should have plenty of grunt to cope with its extra capacity. Go for the less well specified versions and the output is restricted to 134bhp."An extra 18cm of load space and a further 42bhp of grunt, all for £1,000…"A major advance with this generation L200 was the introduction of the Super Select 4WD system which features in the Long Bed models. This is an advanced full time 4x4 set-up similar to that found in Mitsubishi's Shogun. It allows the L200 to be driven in 2WD or fulltime 4WD mode on the road without the excessive wear and tear suffered by part time systems as a result of transmission wind-up. In slippery off-road situations, a further 4WD mode can be selected which maximises traction by locking the centre differential. Both of the systems are operated by the traditional and rather clunky lever sited alongside the gear stick which seems dated when compared to the dash-mounted dials used by rival manufacturers. All of the Super Select L200 models feature the M-ASTC traction and stability control system as standard. The Long Bed version of the L200 basically amounts to an extended load bed which is 18cm longer than that of a standard L200 double cab model. To further enhance the carrying ability of the vehicle, the sides of the bed itself have also been raised and squared off at the rear. The total load length is increased from 133cm to 151cm so there's that much more chance of getting an awkwardly-shaped item to fit. The L200 double cab bodystyle offers a five-seat interior with a decent amount of legroom for the rear passengers and seat backs angled at 25 degrees which make a pleasant change from the staunchly upright seating provision usually found in older double cab pick-ups. Some of the plastics in the cabin aren't of the highest quality but effort has clearly been made with the design and there are some nice touches designed to tally with the L200's curvy exterior. Most of this model's rivals take a far more conservative approach to their styling. The Long Bed models cost £750 over and above the standard L200 double cabs but if you order one of the higher spec versions with the increased power output, there's a further £250 to pay. That's still not a huge amount of money and every L200 is covered by a 3-year/100,000 mile warranty with twelve years of anti-corrosion cover. There's the usual wide choice of trim levels with the Long Bed versions of the L200. The 4Work model opens proceedings with a stripped-out commercially-orientated specification and the 4Life is also available offering a few more creature comforts. Both of these models make do with the standard L200 power-output. It's likely, however, that the better equipped Warrior and Animal variants will attract more business, especially from buyers who use their vehicles for work and domestic purposes. The Warrior has 17" alloy wheels, cruise control, climate control, a leather steering wheel and super-select four-wheel-drive. Upgrade to the Animal and buyers get extra kit in the shape of a DVD satellite navigation system, leather trim, Bluetooth compatibility and various chrome styling accessories. An extra 18cm of load space and a further 42bhp of grunt, all for £1,000. That's about the size of the offer Mitsubishi is making with its L200 Long Bed models - or the higher specification ones at least. Lower-spec L200s don't get the power boost but the option to extend the load bay of this popular pick-up is one that many customers are likely to take up.Facts At A Glance MANUFACTURER: Mitsubishi MODEL: L200 Long Bed BHP: 138bhp - 176bhp PAYLOAD CAPACITY: 705kg [est] LOAD VOLUME: N/A GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT: N/At LOAD LENGTH: 1510mm July 10th 2009
