Peugeot 207 Economique : WILL THE `MIQUE INHERIT THE EARTH?

Car And Driving - Peugeot is in search of the green Pound with its 207 Economique. Steve Walker takes a look.Car buyers have been confronted with a whole new category of cars in recent times, one that has pervaded across the middle to lower part of the market almost in its entirety. Environmental special models are, depending on your point of view, the motor industry's answer to the peril our planet finds itself in or a cynical marketing ploy to tap the growing public desire to go green and cut costs. Peugeot's standard bearing green range is called Economique and the 207 Economique is tasked with winning sales at the green end of the supermini sector. There was what looked suspiciously like a touch of indecision in the Peugeot ranks at the time when the various manufacturer environmental brands started to get off the ground. By now you may have heard of Ford's ECOnetic, Vauxhall's ecoFLEX, Volkswagen's BlueMotion or some of the other variations on this theme but while these brands were pushing their eco-credentials Peugeot appeared to edging towards a different approach. The French manufacturer unveiled its Blue Lion standard which is awarded to all of its low emissions models as a handy guide for consumers but it initially resisted the urge to produce environmental special models in the way its competitors had. As rival manufacturers started to enjoy success with their efforts, however, Peugeot could hold off no longer. The 207 Economique arrived with the kind of aerodynamic and efficiency tweaks we've come to expect from such vehicles. It may have been a little late turning up to the eco-friendly party but with sub-100g/km emissions, it's brought the equivalent of an enormous bowl of Fair Trade mung bean salad. It's natural to assume that there will be some kind of compromise in the way the 207 Economique drives as a result of its focus on efficiency but Peugeot assures us that no such downsides will be evident in its car. Power comes from the same 1.6-litre HDi engine that pops up in other 207 models and is used elsewhere across the Peugeot range. It has 90bhp and can propel the 207 Economique from 0-60mph in 11.7s, then on to a 115mph top speed. That and its 218Nm of torque will be enough for the eco-friendly Peugeot to keep pace with most middle of the road superminis."Lowered suspension and body kits were once the preserve of models from the faster end of the supermini spectrum"The 207 isn't an obvious candidate for conversion to environmental special form as it's quite a size, even by modern supermini standards. The advantage of the Peugeot's mass is its composure and that all important big car feel out on the road. It's an unhurried, comfortable car to drive that's great on longer journeys and takes to twisty back roads with relish thanks to its well-judged suspension. The 5-speed gearbox is the only real drawback. The slack action isn't what you want in a nimble supermini and it lets the rest of the driving package down a bit. Lowered suspension and body kits were once the preserve of models from the faster end of the supermini spectrum but now they've been transplanted on to environmentally-focused models like the 207 Economique. The reason is that they lend significant aerodynamic benefits and owners get the added advantage that the car looks sportier than it otherwise would as well. The Economique is 5mm lower than a conventional 207 and features deeper side sill extensions along with extra trim on to lower edge of the front bumper and optimised air intakes. It all helps to bring the car closer to terra firma, forcing more air over the roof and helping the car move more efficiency. It also gives the car a hot hatch-style appearance as there's a two part rear spoiler which sits at the top of the rear screen either side of the high level brake light. Economique features that hot hatch owners would be less likely to see on their cars include special aerodynamic wheel trims and Michelin low rolling resistance tyres. The styling of the 207 was somewhat controversial when the car first appeared but recent revisions have helped tone down looks that were once more striking than conventionally attractive. The large front intake is flanked by a pair of vents that visually widen the car and LED tail lights feature at the rear. The cabin has also benefited from much needed trim enhancements but it still isn't one of the sector's more impressive environments. Despite the 207's size, rear legroom is better in many rivals. There are Economique and Economique + models for buyers to mull over, both powered by the same HDI 90 engine. The standard specification includes electric front windows, a CD stereo with MP3 compatibility, remote central locking, four airbags and an advanced ABS braking system. The door handles and side mouldings are black plastic. On the Economique +, there's air-conditioning, electric door mirrors and a trip computer to tell you how your economy drive is going but the price premium is £900. There are also three and five-door versions, with the later costing an extra £500. There are a lot of other supermini-based models targeted at buyers who want to minimise their motoring costs and environmental impact, so this car has a major task on its hands. Peugeot remains a big name in the supermini market and the 207 sells extremely strongly across Europe so it's hard to imagine this most efficient version turning out to be a flop. The pricing will deter some, with the car starting at around £13,000, but in winning sales from rivals, much will depend on those all-important economy and emissions figures. In 2000, the most efficient version of the 206 supermini could return 56mpg on the combined cycle. Today, the 207 Economique can get over 74mpg over the same test. The resulting CO2 emissions are 99g/km, making the car effective from a tax as well as a consumption point of view. The advances made by Peugeot in its small cars don't hinge on some miraculous technological breakthrough. Like most other supermini manufacturers, the firm has made small gains across numerous aspects of the construction and engineering of its cars. It begs the question why such modifications weren't made earlier but the fact is that consumer demand is there now and the leading brands have got the green bit right between their teeth. Peugeot may have been a little slow out of the blocks with an environmental special version of its 207 supermini but the Economique models are here and they're right up with the cleanest, greenest superminis on the market. Powered by Peugeot's 1.6-litre HDi engine, the cars' performance is more than adequate, while the various modifications brought in to boost its showing at the pumps have had the happy side effect of injecting a little extra sporting flavour to the styling. The 207 is one of the top superminis on the UK market, offering a big car feel in its compact package and there's no reason to suppose that the most fuel efficient model in its line-up won't strike the right notes with buyers.Facts At A Glance CAR: Peugeot 207 Economique PRICES: £12,995-£14,495 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 5 [est] CO2 EMISSIONS: 99g/km PERFORMANCE: 0-60mph 11.7s / Max Speed 115mph FUEL CONSUMPTION: (combined) 74.3mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front and side airbags, ABS WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Heightmm 4030/1748/1502

Peugeot 207 : FAMILY FAVOURITE

Car And Driving - June Neary and Family Put The Peugeot 207 to the test….The arrival of any new car is always an event in our household. The kids crawl all over the back seats looking for new gadgets. My husband pops the bonnet and scans the cam covers. And me? I just take a step back and take it all in. With the Peugeot 207, doing just that was an enjoyable experience. And an enlightening one. I hadn't expected much interest from my neighbours in an affordable model like this one but I was wrong. Words were exchanged over the garden fence. Cups of sugar were borrowed. It created a stir.First and foremost, I'd say that in my view after having completed a few hundred miles in this car, I think it would be an easy one to own. You slip in behind the wheel and everything feels just right, the major controls falling to hand easily. Too many of the cars I test require you to get out and study the handbook before you can explore all the functions available but with this one, I was up and running almost immediately. If you can operate a payphone, you shouldn't have much trouble with this car. There were lots of little touches around the cabin which showed just how much care the designers had taken to get things just right. We lost count of what car marketers call `surprise and delight' features - basically, clever little additions you simply wouldn't expect on a car like this. The engine responsiveness of the 1.6-litre 110bhp HDi diesel engine in the Sport variant I tried was more direct than I had expected from this class of car - a boon when overtaking slow moving traffic. It's a very torquey powerplant too - in other words, there's plenty of pulling power. And that's a help not only when overtaking but in urban traffic as well. Unlike other cars in this class, I didn't find myself constantly having to change gear to keep the engine on song. No matter how characterful an engine is, if you're constantly having to row it along with the gearlever, it quickly becomes an irritation. All-round visibility is great, again, a boon when you're manoeuvring around crowded city streets. You also feel very safe behind the wheel: it's one of those cars you could trust to your eighteen year old daughter (if you absolutely had to), knowing that she would be as safe as it was possible to be. Finally, it's secure. Tests have shown that it's one of those cars that crooks just walk away from.Peugeot are offering a choice of six petrol and three diesel engines. The petrol models offered are a 1.4-litre 8-valve unit producing 75bhp, a 1.4-litre 16-valve unit producing 90bhp, a 1.4-litre VTi with 95bhp, a 1.6-litre VTi giving out 120bhp, plus 150 and 175bhp 1.6-litre turbo options. The diesel offerings are all second generation common-rail high-pressure direct injection powerplants and start with a 1.4-litre HDi producing 70bhp. This is followed by a 1.6-litre HDi 16-valve delivering 90bhp and a range topping version of the same engine with a variable geometry turbocharger producing 110bhp. This car isn't the cheapest in its sector but then you wouldn't expect quality to come without a price. When you sit down and compare it to rivals, it actually stacks up extremely well. Especially when you take account of the high level of specification included. For example, air-conditioning is available to 207 buyers in two specifications, dual zone manual or automatic. I particularly liked the fact that each vehicle is equipped with a fragrance diffuser which is discreetly incorporated into the fascia panel and dispenses one of seven selectable fragrances to keep the interior of your 207 smelling sweetly. Each fragrance has apparently been specially developed by a leading French perfume supplier. Other useful features include automatic activation of the dipped beam, automatic front windscreen wipers, electric front windows with one-touch automatic reverse control and a remote control for the radio situated under the steering wheel.I'd say so, yes. This car looks good, the family like it and, when you add everything up, it's also very good value for money. That's a pretty difficult combination to beat.

Peugeot 3008 : DON'T GET CROSS, GET A CROSS-OVER

Car And Driving - Peugeot's 3008 cross-over attempts to offer the best of two worlds. Steve Walker takes a lookA few years back, it dawned on the major car manufacturers that the public really liked 4x4 vehicles. There was a corresponding explosion in the numbers of off-roaders both in the showrooms and on the roads, followed by an entirely predictable backlash against them. In more recent times, it's been looking increasingly likely that the public don't actually like 4x4s that much at all. What they actually like is certain characteristics that only 4x4 vehicles could offer. The cross-over vehicle was born to deliver these qualities, having distilled away the worst foibles of the off-roader. Peugeot's 3008 is just such a cross-over but is it the car for you?Cross-over is one of those horrid catch-all terms that can mean pretty much anything. It's a kind of halfway house in some respects, a compromise between two kinds of vehicle but one that raises awkward questions. Can really great cars be born out of compromise? What exactly is the cross-over crossing over from and to? Where its 3008 is concerned, Peugeot's answer would be that this is a cross-over coming from somewhere between the 308 hatchback and the 4007 compact 4x4. Peugeot is putting the best of its engine range to work in the 3008. That means 2.0-litre and 1.6-litre HDi diesels plus 1.6-litre VTi and THP petrols. If we take the diesel options first, there's a 110bhp 1.6-litre unit at the base of the range that's available with the standard six-speed manual gearbox or Peugeot's clever electronically-controlled clutchless system. Next come the 2.0-litre options packing 150bhp and 163bhp. The more powerful of these comes with a conventional six-speed automatic. Petrol buyers can take either the 120bhp 1.6-litre VTi engine and its five-speed manual transmission or step on to the turbocharged 1.6-litre THP which develops 150bhp."The way elements from the two types of vehicle have been combined does create something a bit different"The 3008's suspension set-up is independent MacPherson struts with an anti-roll bar at the front and a torsion beam at the rear. It's the sort of arrangement still found in the majority of family hatchbacks. There's no four-wheel-drive option with the standard 3008. Instead, Peugeot claims to have boosted the car's `outdoor' abilities by including a special Grip Control traction control system. It has five operating modes, each designed to optimise traction on a particular surface. The more powerful engine options also include the Dynamic Roll Control system which is designed to counteract the body roll that higher riding vehicles can experience when cornered with feeling. Variable electro-hydraulic power steering is also included as standard as is ESP stability control with a built-in hill assist function. The 3008 runs on the same underpinnings as the 308 hatch and its other spin-off models. Styling-wise, it employs a conventional hatchback shape but its high nose, the beefy grille and bumper combination and those flared wheelarches provide the hint of SUV that marks the 3008 out as a cross-over. Peugeot's recent design efforts have split opinion with the enormous yawning grille that was rolled out across the model range proving distinctive but not always in an aesthetically pleasing way. In moving away from this family face, the 3008 is one of the best looking Peugeots we've seen for a while. The rear tailgate is split like that of the 4007 SUV, so while the top section lifts up like a hatch, the bottom one drops down to form a convenient loading platform that can hold 200kg. Total boot space is a very large 512-litres and this jumps to 1,604 litres when the rear seats are folded down. The seating is raised up higher than that of a normal hatchback, mimicking one of the traits that's most popular with buyers choosing compact 4x4 vehicles. There's also a large glazed area to assist further with visibility. An optional glass roof like the one found on the 308 SW estate can further increase the amount of light making its way into the cabin. Peugeot is particularly proud of the air-conditioning system on the 3008. It features an air-quality sensor that closes off the inflow of air from outside the car if high levels of pollution are detected, recalculating the air that's already inside. How well the 3008 fares will depend how well it mingles the qualities of hatchback and 4x4, and whether Peugeot's take on the best way to manage the compromises is in tune with that of the public. Obvious rivals for the car include other cross-over efforts like Nissan's Qashqai but in straddling the compact 4x4 and family hatch classes, the 3008 gives its customers a vast range of alternatives that can do a similar job. Choosing a new car was never easy but with the dividing lines between market segments becoming increasingly hazy, buyers have it as tough now as they ever have. The range is based around Active, Sport and Exclusive trim levels but even the entry-level variants come with 17" steel wheels with Michelin Energy Saver Tyres, a leather steering wheel, a CD player, front fog-lights, electric front windows, air-conditioning, an automatic electric parking brake with hill assist, the electronic stability programme (ESP), a height and reach adjustable steering wheel, remote central door locking with deadlocks and ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBFD). Four-wheel drive is usually a recipe for increased fuel consumption and that's one reason why the 3008 doesn't offer its customers the option of four driven wheels, at least not in the traditional sense. At launch, all models will be front-wheel drive but there's something in the pipeline that will change all that. The 3008 will be the first model to feature Peugeot's Hybrid 4 technology, a diesel hybrid system that uses a conventional engine to power the front wheels and an electric motor to power those at the back. With the electric motor taking the strain of the diesel one, fuel economy of over 57mpg is achievable and CO2 emissions are reduced to just 109g/km. Car buyers uncertain whether to plump for the high driving position and chunky looks of a 4x4 or the handling composure and fuel economy of a family hatchback could have their dilemma solved at a stroke by the Peugeot 3008. This cross-over model might be the automotive equivalent of sitting on the fence but its amalgamation of qualities from two popular market sectors could be just what some people are looking for. Peugeot has taken the 308 platform and added a higher driving position and some pretty 4x4-style design cues. It's thrown in a solid engine range and some clever technological features as well. There's nothing especially groundbreaking here unless you count the forthcoming Hybrid 4 diesel/electric hybrid system but the way elements from the two types of vehicle have been combined does create something a bit different.Facts At A Glance CAR: Peugeot 3008 PRICES: £15,995-£21,895 - on the road INSURANCE GROUPS: 6-11 [est] CO2 EMISSIONS: 137-176g/km PERFORMANCE: [1.6 THP 150] 0-60mph 8.9s / Top Speed 125mph FUEL CONSUMPTION: [1.6 HDi 110] (urban) 43.5mpg / (extra urban) 64.2mpg / (combined) 55.4mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Six airbags, ABS, ESP.
