Subaru Impreza WRX : HATCHING AN ALTERNATIVE PLAN

Car And Driving - The latest Subaru Impreza WRX is radically different to its predecessor but can it retain its enthusiast fan base? Andy Enright reports.Ever since the early nineties weve known what to expect from a hot Subaru Impreza. Saloon body shape, or Sportwagon for the wilfully odd, charismatic horizontally opposed engine, an interior with less charm than a branch of LIDL, four-wheel drive and the occasional garish colour scheme were the staples. The driving experience was never anything less than very good and frequently brilliant, with highlights being special models such as the 22B, the RB5, the P1 and the RB320. Now the script has been changed. Certain trademarks continue with the latest Impreza WRX. Its still got a flat-four, turbocharged engine that drives all four wheels but its not what youd expect of an Impreza to look at. For a start, its a hatchback. Its also a lot better finished than any Impreza has been to date and could even pass, in a sober colour, as normal family transport. Strange things are indeed afoot at the Circle K. When Subaru ditched the Imprezas classic 2.0-litre flat four in favour of a bigger 2.5-litre lump, many expected revolt from die-hard Subaru fans but it never came, partly due to the qualities of the bigger engine. That engine is carried over into the latest WRX with a few improvements. Peak torque (236lb/ft) and power (228bhp) are still the same but the delivery is very different. Whereas the old WRX sometimes felt strangely gutless when pulling out of junctions and onto roundabouts, the latest car is transformed thanks to 221lb/ft of torque being available at 2,000rpm where the old car could only manage 150lb/ft at that engine speed. The sprint to 60mph still comes up in 5. 4 seconds but there are some interesting detail changes. The WRX features an anti-roll bar and the SVDC dynamics control package as an extra safety net should the full-time all-wheel-drive transmission system relinquish its hold on the road. Under normal conditions, drive is split 50/50 between the front and rear axles in the manual cars (60/40 in the automatic) but a centre differential with viscous coupling diverts torque to the axle with most grip to reduce wheelspin. The WRX also features a mechanical rather than a viscous limited-slip differential between the rear wheels. "Theres precious little cause for complaint when it comes to the engineering"In the UK, the Impreza was always either a saloon or a five-door Sportwagon that trod the line between hatchback and estate but now its only offered as a conventional five-door hatch. The car is 45mm wider than the old Sportwagon and has 95mm extra in the wheelbase. This brings a useful increase in interior space that will go down well with family buyers, as will the more compact rear suspension design which facilitates a 170-litre increase in boot space to 538 litres. The side skirts and spoilers on the WRX models do sharpen-up that sporty edge and have served to quieten those who threw their toys from their prams when they first caught sight of this generation of Impreza. If it was any sports hatch other than a Subaru Impreza youd have to say it doesnt look too bad, so maybe we just need a period of acclimatisation. At least the interior is a big step forward. The tough plastics and staid design of the old car have finally been axed in favour of the superior quality materials and modern layout in this model. The old Impreza range was firmly geared towards the tarmac-shredding performance models with the less powerful versions being little more than odd curios. Subaru has tried to flip that on its head with the latest Impreza, putting greater emphasis on the normally aspirated 1.5 and 2.0-litre cars so it could go head to head with European hatchbacks. In fact, the company wasnt planning to import the WRX at all and its availability may be rather limited, with the even more powerful WRX STI model acting as a halo product at the top of the range. Fortunately, when they saw the opportunity to shift some stock, Subaru backtracked. The result is that the Impreza 2.5 WRX is available at what looks to be a very competitive UK retail price of £19,995 which compares very well with rivals like the Mazda3 MPS and the Volkswagen Golf R32. More blue collar rivals such as the Ford Focus ST, the Vauxhall Astra VXR and the Renaultsport Megane still manage to undercut it but none offer the security of all-wheel drive. Equipment includes alloy wheels, climate control, a CD stereo, a height and reach adjustable steering wheel, fog lamps, electric windows, a vehicle information display, xenon headlamps, a six-disc auto changer and more aggressive styling. The airbag count is also good with side front and curtain bags as standard. Cost of ownership was traditionally an area where the old Impreza WRX struggled, the car making sense to committed petrolheads but its ongoing bills were always too steep for the Impreza to cross over into the mainstream. To be honest, its hard to see that latest car changing that particular issue, a combined fuel consumption figure of 27. 2mpg being significantly worse than a 302bhp BMW 335i. Of course, it can be argued that the Impreza WRXs fuel economy is actually very good for a car that can keep a Lamborghini honest along a Welsh moorland road but in town youll be lucky to get near Subarus 19.8mpg urban figure. The WRX produces a hefty 246g/km of CO2, so it wont go on too many company car lists. Residual values look better than initially predicted for the Impreza although insurance looks expensive. One thing that buyers can rely on is that fact that Subaru regularly features amongst the UKs top manufacturers in customer satisfaction surveys with the unyielding reliability of its products usually cited as the major reason why. Theres no evidence to suggest that the latest Impreza wont further the manufacturers reputation in this regard, especially with versions of the engines and transmissions having already seen service in other Subaru products. Radical change is always an uncomfortable process and in reinventing a performance icon, Subaru may well have to suffer some short term pain in order to reap longer term rewards. The latest Impreza WRX is not a car that at first sits easily on the eye, but then we have said that about previous generation models and have grown to accept them. Even the controversial bug-eye Impreza from 2000 now looks pretty good. Theres precious little cause for complaint when it comes to the engineering. Yes, the Impreza WRX is no longer as raw or as urgent as the old car but its no slower and the interior no longer feels as if its about to spontaneously disintegrate should you fail to spot a sneaky speed hump. I was prepared to hate this car but suspect that it could prove a grower. The product is strong and the price is right but are Subarus customers ready?FACTS AT A GLANCE CAR: Subaru Impreza WRX PRICE: 19,995 - on the road CO2 EMISSIONS: 246g/km INSURANCE GROUP: 19 PERFORMANCE: Max Speed 147mph [est] / 0-60mph 5.4s FUEL CONSUMPTION: (urban) 19.8mpg / (extra urban) 34.4mpg / (combined) 27.2mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: front, side and curtain airbags / ABS / EBD / VDC WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height 4415/1740/1475mm

Subaru Impreza Torbo/WRX (1994 To 2007) : THE CULT OF THE PERSONALITY

Car And Driving - MODELS COVERED: 2/4 door saloon, 5 door hatchback: Series 1 1994 2.0-litre [Turbo, Terzo, Series McRae, P1, Catalunya] 2.2-litre [22B] Series 2 2000-2003 [WRX, UK300] Series 3 2003 2006 [WRX, WRX STi, WR1, STi Type-UK] Series 4 2006- to date [WRX, WRX SL, STi Type-UK]BY ANDY ENRIGHTIf one car could be said to have spawned an entire motoring cult, its probably the Subaru Impreza Turbo. No, it wasnt the first four-wheel drive sports car, but it has legitimate claims on being the greatest. Since its introduction to the UK in 1994, the Turbo spawned a whole host of go-faster editions, and has subsequently metamorphosed into the WRX variants. Many thought the rush for this most prolific of Japanese evo-cars would die down after the early sales boom of the mid nineties but years later, turbocharged Imprezas are still hot tickets. There are some used examples about that by now have fallen into the wrong hands. Heres how to steer clear of these rogues. The first Impreza Turbo models now appear surprisingly crude things compared with their more sophisticated offspring but still serve up the basic formula of rapid fun, surprising practicality, excellent reliability and rather substandard interiors. The dull grey plastics and often uninspiring seating trims made it obvious why the special edition models found such ready takers although Subaru smartened the Series 1 models up towards the end of their lives with high level rear wings and two-tone bucket seats. As with so many evolutionary models, the Series 2 Impreza range emerges as a better car, although perhaps not quite so exciting as the previous model. It certainly feels a more mature proposition. The interior does at least appear to be built to a far more acceptable standard of quality. The seats will feel slightly narrow for some tastes, but offer great support. In the WRX variant, the leather-trimmed Momo steering wheel and drilled aluminium pedal set certainly complete the sporting picture. The fascia has been livened up with splashes of silver and chrome, and the effect, whilst unlikely to give Audi sleepless nights, is a vast improvement on the old model. Some details still grate, however. The cupholders jam in their slots and theres some untidy finishing, but the interior no longer feels like a cheap and cheerful Korean shopping hatch. All Imprezas are surprisingly practical propositions given their explosive performance. The five-door wagon is especially well suited to trail driving/ski resort duties. Lets keep this simple. Were only dealing with UK cars here as to describe the various import models is an unenviable mission. The first of the 1994 Turbo models can now be found for around £4,500 in either saloon or hatch guise. The more powerful 215bhp cars start at £6,800 and the last of the classic Series 1 models change hands at around £8,000. The first of the Series 2 WRX models opens at around £8,500 with a decent 2003 03-plated saloon retailing at around £11,500. Facelifted WRX cars start on an 03-plate for around £13,000 and a 54-plate STi Type-UK model will be just shy of £18,000. Special edition models are trickier to value. Although the Terzo and Catalunyya models arent worth a great deal more than the cooking Impreza Turbo, the Series McRae is becoming rather sought after and the RB5 especially with the 236bhp power upgrade commands prices around £2,000 over the standard car. The P1 two-door is a very different proposition and these start at £14,000 for a 2000 W-registered model. This can be something of a minefield as there are few early cars around that are in an unmolested state, many of them having had essential basic servicing neglected. Look for crash damage and check the condition of the turbocharger. White smoke from the exhaust can herald big bills. Check the owner thoroughly. Do they know much about the cars history? Are they willing to let you thrash the car from cold? Youll also need to find out whether youre looking at a UK car or a grey import. Cars imported from Japan are often prone to rust and there are some very tatty looking models about. Look for kerbed alloys, spongy brakes, worn clutches, sizzled tyres and hamfisted performance upgrades. Parts are expensive, so tread carefully. If youre looking at an RB5 or a UK300, remember that there were two versions, one with a flashy bodykit and a bog standard 215bhp, the other with a flashy bodykit and a wickedly non-standard engine upgrade. Dont make the mistake of bidding upgrade money for the standard version. You can try to convince a seller that his upgraded car is only worth the same as this one youve seen here in the FreeAds but Impreza owners are, by and large, an informed bunch. The fact that the Impreza regularly comes at or near the pinnacle of the J D Power surveys is testament to its almost metronomic reliability. Jump from an Audi S3 into an Impreza Turbo or WRX and your first impression would be that the Impreza would be lucky to last all the way to the bottom of your drive, but the Subaru trounces the Audi in terms of actual reliability. The cheap fascia plastics and the exposed wiring in the boot may look like corner cutting, but the bits that matter have had millions of yen of development budget thrown at them.(2.0 WRX approx.) Subaru parts have a deserved reputation for being expensive. A clutch assembly is around £200. Front brake pads are around £80, and a new alternator is over £400 new. A headlamp is £240 while a cam belt is just over £100. Even a humble fuel filter is £33.The WRX doesnt feel anything like as vivid as the old Impreza Turbo. With the same power, 70kg of extra weight to haul around and a turbo response tuned for torque rather than explosive mid-range punch, this may not be surprising. Like so many other aspects of this latest model, however, if you give it time youll come round to its reasoning. Take the steering for example. It doesnt possess anything like the feedback of the previous cars but when hammering along a narrow, rutted B-road, youll be able to carry far more speed with far more composure, as the wheel will now feel calm, direct and perfectly weighted. A standard WRX model can despatch the sprint to 60mph in 5.9 seconds en route to a top speed of 143mph for the saloon and 140 for the estate. The brakes have been improved over the old Turbo, with ventilated discs all round giving an impressively fade-free performance. If you really want to cover ground fast, look for the RB5 or the P1.The Impreza is a cult car for good reason. Fast, reliable and as tough as old boots, and entire industry has sprung up offering accessories, performance extras and styling addenda for the Impreza. As long as you pick a car that hasnt been horribly cowboyed, you should find a used Impreza a fast track to the sort of motoring fun you thought was a thing of the past. Although its not a cheap car to run, a used Impreza Turbo or WRX is surprisingly practical and can often be sold to a sceptical other half on the basis that that practicality and Subarus consistent high placing in JD Power surveys. Cult cars usually come with considerable caveats. Not so the Impreza.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI (2002 To 2007) : RALLYING TO THE CAUSE

Car And Driving - Models Covered: 4 DOOR SALOON 2.0, 2.0 TURBO [WRX STI, STI TYPE-UK])BY ANDY ENRIGHTThe letter STi hold a special sort of appeal for many Subaru Impreza enthusiasts. Think of Subaru Technica International as the go faster wing of Subaru much as M is to BMW, AMG is to Mercedes or, more accurately, Ralliart is to Mitsubishi. STi badged Imprezas command serious respect and the officially imported UK cars are always in big demand as specialist used cars. There are plenty of early imports around, but well concentrate here on the post 2002 models rather than the legions of grey import cars that made their way to these shores in the late nineties. Introduced at the 2001 Frankfurt Show, the STi is powered by a 265bhp 2.0-litre flat four engine, but dont be fooled into thinking that its merely a case of plugging in a more aggressive engine management chip or a bucket-sized turbocharger. Nearly 80% of the STis all-alloy powerplant is unique. Two versions are offered for the UK market the standard STi and the special edition STi Prodrive Style. Differences to the regular WRX include special gold-coloured spoked alloy wheels, colour-keyed sill spoilers and an interior featuring blue suede-effect seats with STi logos and red stitching for the steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake lever. Also inside - and sure to please enthusiasts - is a switch to spray the intercooler with water. Another device allows the driver to preset a warning buzzer and light to guard against over-revving the engine. On opening the bonnet, the engine compartment greets owners with a dramatic mixture of colours and detailing. The intake manifold, for example, is painted in red and the enlarged aluminium intercooler emblazoned with 'STi' lettering. In addition, the STi Prodrive Style features a massive high-riding boot spoiler, newly designed sill spoilers and a deeper, squarer front bumper. The grille and badging resemble the WRC rally car. Interior enhancements over the standard STI include dark blue-coloured instruments with red needles. Four colours were available: WR Blue Mica, Blue Black Mica, Premium Silver Metallic and Pure White, the latter two being available to special order only. The facelifted car followed the same theme with revised suspension and a few engine tweaks. Dont be fooled into thinking that the power increase over the WRX has been achieved by merely plugging in a more aggressive engine management chip or a bucket-sized turbocharger. Nearly 80% of the STis all-alloy powerplant is unique. The piston head was reshaped to form tougher semi-closed-deck cylinder blocks. Screw-in conrods and forged pistons combine with shimless valve lifters, sodium-filled exhaust valves and hollow valve intakes. Every moving part is either stronger, lighter or both. This reduces inertia and gives the engine a manic free-revving feel thats missing from the standard WRX. A larger intercooler and air intake help keep things from meltdown, and a water spray has been fitted to the intercooler that is operated by the driver via a dash-mounted button. Serious stuff.Pre-facelift WRX STi models start at £14,700 on a 2002 51-plate whilst the Prodrive edition costs £16,500 on the same plate. Japanese import cars can be had for less and with a full slug of 276bhp but they lack the rustproofing of UK cars as well as the Thatcham alarm/immobiliser, the satellite tracking system and the three-year/60,000 mile warranty. You pay your money. Later shape facelift cars are harder to come by but expect to pay at least £20,000. Do take insurance bills into account when budgeting for your car as youll be looking at Group 20.Theres quite a bit to bear in mind here given the Impreza WRX STi is still fairly new to the used arena. First and foremost, make sure your STi is exactly what it says on the tin. There have been tales of unscrupulous vendors passing cosmetically modified WRX models as STi versions at big mark-ups. The same goes for cars with and without the Prodrive engine upgrades. Inspect the car carefully and its advisable to undertake background checks to ensure it hasnt been stolen/recovered or crashed. A service history is essential and watch for non-standard parts, resprays, kerbed alloys, spongy brakes and worn clutches. Parts are expensive, so tread carefully. The fact that the Impreza regularly comes at or near the pinnacle of the J D Power surveys is testament to its almost metronomic reliability. Jump from an Audi S3 into an Impreza WRX STi and your first impression would be that the Impreza would be lucky to last all the way to the bottom of your drive, but the Subaru trounces the Audi in terms of actual reliability. The cheap fascia plastics and the exposed wiring in the boot may look like corner cutting, but the bits that matter have had millions of yen of development budget thrown at them.(2002 WRX STi approx.) Subaru parts have a deserved reputation for being expensive. A clutch assembly is around £240. Front brake pads are around £80, and a new alternator is over £400 new. A headlamp unit is £260 while a cam belt is just over £100. Even a humble fuel filter is £33.STi owners will certainly have enough performance to be able to blow most other road users into the undergrowth with a rest to sixty figure of 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 148mph on the cards. These figures err on the conservative side, and give no hint as to the sheer otherworldliness of the Imprezas cornering abilities. The facelift model will run on to a top speed of 151mph. The power delivery is frustratingly toppy insofar as theres very little action below 4,500rpm. Unless you really grit your teeth and have no sympathy for the clutch, youll get beaten off the line by far humbler fare. Like the seminal Impreza P1 before it, the WRX STi is a car that only really makes sense when being driven like an absolute banshee. To set the mood, Subaru ought to perhaps supply the car with a looping CD of Motorheads Ace of Spades at full volume in the excellent audio system. The STi can also be fitted with a 305 PS performance pack giving a 155 mph top speed and 0-60 mph time of only 4.6 seconds. Developed by Banbury-based Prodrive, the power boost ups the available oomph from 265 PS (261.5 bhp) to 305 PS (300 bhp) at the same 6,000 rpm but torque rises from the standard STis 253 lb ft to 299 lb ft, also at the same 4,000 rpm. The result is not only startling high-rev performance but also more low and mid-speed flexibility. In other words, the car becomes swifter at any speed and in any gear.Cult cars usually come with considerable caveats. This one is different. The Impreza WRX STi is a car that can be used to commute to work, to blast across a continent or to take to a favourite racetrack at the weekend and have the time of your life. Few cars offer such versatility, practicality, reliability and sheer fun. Whichever version you buy, youll be guaranteed a car that has deeper reserves of capability than you could ever have imagined. If you want to find out why such an aura has built up around the Impreza, the STi offers all the answers. Just go. Youll see.
