Subaru Forester 2.0D : FOREST FIRE

Car And Driving - Fitted with a class-leading diesel engine, Subaru's Forester is suddenly an informed choice for compact 4x4 and all-wheel drive estate buyers alike. Jonathan Crouch reportsThe Subaru Forester's clever diesel 2.0D engine, along with the current generation model's larger body, puts the car in a better position than ever before to snag sales from traditional Freelander and RAV4-sized smallish 4x4s, all well as to continue to serve those family buyers who need occasional extra traction and are in search of something just that little bit different. This Japanese brand took its time in developing a diesel engine but the end result was worth the wait, particularly for customers of the Forester, the marque's rather interesting cross between all-wheel drive estate and compact 4x4. It seems astonishing that the car managed to campaign quite successfully on the UK market for over ten years without one, but that tells you a lot about the loyal following this model has attracted since its launch here in 1997. We've now reached the third generation guise of the car that really started off the concept of a pumped up executive estate car with the ability to handle light off road duties. More recently launched (and theoretically slightly larger) rivals include Volvo's XC70 and Audi's Allroad but both are far more expensive, leaving the Subaru a largely unobstructed run at the more pragmatic buyers who are going to be particularly attracted by the 2.0D version. This Forester diesel has a number of class-leading qualities but one of them isn't the 145PS output of its boxer engine which struggles a little more with this weightier model than it does when installed in the company's more tarmac-orientated Legacy range. Still, the rest to sixty sprint is dispatched in a quite acceptable 10 seconds on the way to a top speed of 115mph, which is quite as fast as most will want to go. Usefully, the extra engine torque over the petrol model allows a full 2,000 kg braked towing limit. The class-leading bits are the emissions (167g/km), fuel economy (44.8mpg on the combined cycle) and range (in Europe, you'll be able to go around 1,000kms between fill-ups). Refinement is another huge strength: when this engine was fitted in the Legacy, Subaru claimed a lower official moving sound level than a Rolls-Royce Phantom. That's down to the engine's unique configuration."This Japanese brand took its time in developing a diesel engine but the end result was worth the wait"Traditionally, diesels have been either traditional upright straight or V-configured units. Subaru has founded its reputation of the low centre of gravity afforded by a horizontally-opposed, or boxer, engine where the cylinders lay flat on their sides, the pistons travelling towards each other like the fists of two pugilists. Manufacturing a diesel engine in this guise has taken some effort but the travails have been worth it. The very first thing that's apparent when clocking this Forester is that the third generation version's rising waistline and broader front end have given it more of a generic compact 4x4 stance. With 110mm more height, 45mm more width and 90mm extra grafted into the wheelbase, this car competes against bigger (and tougher) competition these days, cars like the Toyota RAV4, the Honda CR-V, the Land Rover Freelander and the Nissan X-TRAIL, rivals that have been refining their talents for quite some years. The styling is neat, albeit with a rather bland front end. Perhaps this is no bad thing after the rather odd-looking Tribeca, Subaru's last foray into the SUV arena. Interiors have never been a Subaru strong point and while the Forester is never going to challenge for class honours here, it's neat and well finished with a brushed aluminium-look centre console and a big driver information system near the top of the dashboard. The front seats can fold fully flat while the rears split 60/40 and recline. With prices from around £20,000, Forester diesel customers pay a premium of over £2,000 more than the comparable 2.0-litre 150bhp petrol engine but they do get a choice of three trim levels - X, XC and XSn. Apart from the expected symmetrical all-wheel drive system, all versions get Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control, self-levelling rear suspension, fuel-saving electric power steering and 16" alloy wheels. You can also expect to find all-round electric windows, 60/40-split rear seats with reclining back-rests, climate-control air-conditioning, a decent CD stereo, front fog lamps, a vehicle information display, a leather-covered height and reach-adjustment steering wheel, heated front seats, mirrors and windscreen wipers plus cruise-control. In the XC, you get bigger alloys, a better stereo and a full-length sunroof, while the pricey XSn adds leather seats and satellite navigation. Much of the engineering and equipment on the Forester positions it as one of the more advanced vehicles in its class. Safety is particularly important for family buyers and the Forester excels in impact absorption for both the vehicle occupants and pedestrians. The front seats get seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters, the brake pedal is collapsible, all pillars feature impact absorbent materials and there are front, side and curtain airbags. Not only does the Forester lead its class when it comes to emissions (the worst you'll get is 170g/km) and fuel economy (you'll get 39.2mpg around town and 48.7mpg on a run), it's also one of the cheapest to insure. Only the VW Tiguan can match the entry-level version's Group 9E insurance rating and most rivals are much pricier at your brokers. The Honda CR-V, for example is Group 12, Nissan X-Trail from Group 13 and Toyota RAV4 is classed from Group11 upwards. As always with Subaru, the warranty is one of the best in the industry, offering three year/60,000 mile cover plus three years' paintwork and 12 years' anti-corrosion cover. This is in addition to three years' free membership of Subaru Assistance - a comprehensive home and roadside repair and recovery package throughout the UK and Europe, administered by Mondial Assistance. Service intervals are 12,000 miles. Without this diesel engine, the Forester would have remained, at best, a bit player in the compact 4x4 sector. Thus equipped however, it suddenly becomes an intriguing left-field choice amongst those not planning anything too arduous on the rough stuff and looking for something that won't look too embarrassing when you pass the green protesters with their placards at the school gate. Its refinement is a particular strength, showing up some diesel 4x4 rivals for the unacceptably loud rumblers that they actually are. And class-leadership in terms of running costs? In a Subaru? It'll take a little time to get used to that one. Taking time to get this unit right has been one of the benefits of the Forester's tardy appearance at this particular party.Facts At A Glance CAR: Subaru Forester 2.0D range PRICES: £20,875-£25,965 - on the road INSURANCE GROUPS: 9-10 C02 EMISSION: 167-170g/km PERFORMANCE: Max Speed 115mph/ 0-60mph 10.0s FUEL CONSUMPTION: [2.0D X] (urban) 39.2mpg / (extra urban) 48.7mpg / (combined) 44.8mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front and side airbags / ABS with EBD / VDC WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height, 4560/1780/1675mm

Subaru Forester Range : FOREST TRUMP

Car And Driving - Subaru's Forester becomes less estate on stilts and more svelte SUV. Jonathan Crouch reportsSubaru's third generation Forester changes its tack with a slightly larger body and the option at last of an impressive diesel engine. In doing so however, it's faced with even tougher competition. It remains a rather individualist choice but now also an informed one. Enthusiasts forced into 4x4 ownership looking for a sharper drive than you'd normally expect from this class of car will continue to love it.A long time before the Audi Allroad or the Volvo XC70 were glints in their respective manufacturers eyes, Subaru had hit upon the idea of a go almost anywhere estate car that could still offer entertainment aplenty on the blacktop. The Forester arrived to a rather puzzled British public way back in 1997, with the second generation version debuting in 2002. Both cars were severely handicapped by the lack of a diesel engine, something that buyers have long expected in this sector. With that put right this time around, it need no longer be a niche player for 4x4 customers who can't quite make up their minds between a fully-fledged compact 4x4 or an all-wheel drive estate. This is a larger car than its predecessor, featuring a 90mm longer wheelbase and tracks widened by 35mm at the front and 45mm at the rear. It's also rides far better (thanks to a sophisticated multi-link, double wishbone rear suspension that's compact enough to increase luggage space) and rolls less (because the position of the boxer engine has been dropped by 10 mm, lowering the centre of gravity). There's a clever fuel-saving electric power steering system, a rear anti-roll bar for better handling on the road and 10mm more ground clearance from the self-levelling suspension for more capability off it. All Forester models feature four-wheel drive but the automatic and manual versions both feature their own four wheel drive system. The manual cars come with a more conventional centre differential system with a viscous limited slip differential whereas the automatic models get an Active Torque Split AWD system. VDC stability control is standard on all models, coordinating the engine, transmission and brakes in order to recover the vehicle's position should extreme manoeuvres or slippery conditions push the Forester into a skid."It retains an individuality that will continue to endear it to a wider range of customersā€¦."The very first thing that's apparent when clocking the latest Forester is that the rising waistline and broader front end have given it more of a generic compact 4x4 stance. In fact it's fully 110mm taller than the outgoing model, 45mm wider and with another 90mm grafted into the wheelbase. This quite significant enlargement takes the Forester out of its old niche and punts it headlong into the midst of cars like the Toyota RAV4, the Honda CR-V, the Land Rover Freelander and the Nissan X-TRAIL, cars that have been refining their talents for quite some years. Entry-level Forester customers get a revised 150PS version of the 2.0-litre `boxer' petrol engine that was fitted to the old model, albeit with revisions that see it being cleaner, more frugal and more flexible. If you can afford a couple of thousand more than the asking price for the 145bhp 2.0-litre diesel however, then it's money well spent. All models include electric windows, 60/40-split rear seats with reclining back-rests, climate-controlled air-conditioning, a radio/CD player, front fog lamps, a vehicle information display, a height and reach-adjustment steering wheel, heated front seats, mirrors and windscreen wipers plus cruise-control. Manual models feature a dual-range transmission. A 40GB hard disk-based navigation system with audio capability is offered. This features 3D screen scrolling, rapid access rates and a 7-inch VGA screen with LED backlighting. The sound system uses Audyssey MultEQ3 technology that corrects in-car sound distortion and features a 7-speaker system with woofer. Not only does the Forester 2.0D lead its class when it comes to emissions (the worst you'll get is 170g/km) and fuel economy (you'll get 39.2mpg around town and 48.7mpg on a run), it's also one of the cheapest to insure. Only the VW Tiguan can match the entry-level version's Group 9E insurance rating and most rivals are much pricier at your brokers. The improvements to this Forester's 150PS 2.0-litre petrol engine result in stronger low and mid-range pulling power, enhanced flexibility and improved fuel economy with lower exhaust emissions. More specifically, there's an improvement over the old model of more than 3mpg on the combined cycle for the automatic many customers buy, with exhaust emissions down by 21g/km. The Urban/Extra Urban and Combined fuel consumption figures are 25.9/40.4 and 33.6 mpg with a low CO2 rating of 198g/km. Subaru hasn't taken the easy way out with this Forester. More of the same would have been the route of least resistance, but in making the Forester bigger and more of a conventional SUV, Subaru has pitched up against some tough competitors. Excellent build quality we can take for granted and due to its size it looks family friendly, but these are qualities shared by many rivals. Cars like the Land Rover Freelander, Honda CR-V, the Toyota RAV4 and the Nissan X-Trail may well be too good to topple from an all-round perspective and the Mitsubishi Outlander and its CitroĆ«n C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007 siblings are also formidable opponents. Subaru may well have jumped from the frying pan into the fire with this car but it retains an individuality that will continue to endear it to a wider range of customers.Facts At A Glance CAR: Subaru Forester range PRICES: £19,110-£25,960 - on the road INSURANCE GROUPS: 9-10 C02 EMISSION: 167-199g/km PERFORMANCE: [2.0D] Max Speed 115mph/ 0-60mph 10.0s FUEL CONSUMPTION: [2.0D X] (urban) 39.2mpg / (extra urban) 48.7mpg / (combined) 44.8mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front and side airbags / ABS with EBD / VDC WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height, 4560/1780/1675mm

Subaru Impreza WRX Sti : THE REAL DEAL

Car And Driving - It's fair to say that many were disappointed when the current generation Impreza was unveiled. The WRX STi model seems to have silenced the critics. Andy Enright reportsMore muscular, faster and cleverer than ever, the latest Subaru Impreza WRX STi silences the critics who reckoned Subaru had dropped an enormous clanger with the latest generation Impreza. With 295bhp under the bonnet from the 2.5-litre flat-four, the character's still there but now it's wrapped up in a better built and more practical body.Sometimes it's great to be wrong. I'll hold my hands up and admit that when I first saw pictures of the current generation Impreza, I thought Subaru had taken their eye off the ball in the worst possible way. While I'm still to be convinced about the aesthetics of the standard car, the WRX STi model just oozes testosterone and, if anything, looks just as aggressive as any of the classic saloon Imprezas that have attracted such a cult following since the early Nineties. Make no mistake, this is a serious performance car, albeit one that is very hard to pass judgement on in isolation. For many years, the fate of hotter Subaru Imprezas has been inextricably linked with its key rival, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo and fans of each marque are fiercely partisan. Subaru enthusiasts had been looking a little glum until the unveiling of the WRX STi. Now there's some feverish anticipation. Although the Japanese market models continue with a 2.0-litre unit, Europe gets the heavier hitting 2.5-litre powerplant good for 295bhp nestling well back in the engine bay of the WRX STi. Couple this with a very clever four wheel drive system and the car will jet off the line as if clouted up the rear by a wrecking ball. Sixty mph comes and goes in just 4.8 seconds on the way to a top speed of just over 155mph. Subaru's Si-Drive system gives the driver three different throttle response maps at the turn of a switch, with Super Sharp the weapon of choice for aggressive driving. The throw on the six-speed gearbox has been shortened for a more direct feel and the Driver's Control Centre Differential has now got even more driver options. This box of tricks allows the driver to select the torque distribution from front to rear, reverting to an auto mode when the ignition is switched off. The steering of the WRX STi feels meaty and aggressive and the electronics assist rather than intrude on the driving experience at the limit."Where the Subaru Impreza WRX STi really impresses is in the way it never forgets that its key role is not to serve up outright speed per se, but deliver funā€¦."The rather anonymous looks of the standard Impreza hatch have been transformed with the addition of heavily blistered wheel arches, giving the STi a properly macho look. This allows the wheels to be pushed out another 45mm at the front and 40mm at the back, giving the car a pugnacious, foursquare stance. A mesh front grille and a deep bumper design with air vents throwing air at the intercooler also up the ante. Side skirts give the effect of visually lowering the car while a high-mounted spoiler and quad exhaust pipes will leave those who have just been overtaken in little doubt as to what's just blown by. Colour choices include the iconic WR Blue, while traditionalists will not want to miss out on the optional gold alloys. There has always been a practical side to the Impreza and this STi is no exception with 95mm extra in the wheelbase compared to the old car. This brings a useful increase in interior space that will go down well with family buyers, as will the more compact rear suspension design which facilitates a 170-litre increase in boot space to 538 litres. At least the interior is a big step forward. The tough plastics and staid design of the old car have finally been axed in favour of the superior quality materials and modern layout in this model. There's only one model available and it's priced to sell at around £26,000. This is around £1,000 less than the old car and makes its key rivals look very expensive indeed. By contrast, the Mitsubishi Evo is a whole stack more expensive and the Audi S3 also looks a bit optimistic at around £27,000. Equipment levels are strong, although an Impreza STi is not the car to buy if you want luxury. Standard gear includes anti lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, Brembo brakes, front, side and curtain airbags, 17-inch alloy wheels, high intensity headlights, Alcantara and leather front bucket seats, a 6-disc CD autochanger, climate controlled air conditioning and cruise control. Bundle that lot with a 295bhp engine and one of the cleverest four-wheel drive systems at any price and that's quite an achievement for £26k. Although the Impreza WRX STi might be quite affordable to buy, it's never going to be a cheap car to keep on the road. Despite an excellent reliability record, service intervals are short and spares costly. A combined fuel consumption figure of 27.4mpg is, in our experience with this engine, hopelessly optimistic and if you return 20mpg in mixed driving conditions you must have the restraint of a monk. Insurance is Group 20 and some will try to load the cover, knowing the Impreza is such an attractive target to thieves. 243g/km of carbon dioxide will also deter anyone who cheekily thinks they'll slide the WRX STi past their fleet manager's beady eye. The one bright spot is that residual values look to be improving as time passes. Where the Subaru Impreza WRX STi really impresses is in the way it never forgets that its key role is not to serve up outright speed per se, but deliver fun. In this respect at least, it claws a key advantage over its rival from Mitsubishi. It also scores big in terms of value for money, the asking price reading like a misprint for such a formidably equipped car. The third, and most unexpected, plus is that the Impreza WRX STi genuinely looks the part, something we never thought we'd say after cackling like a bunch of Smash robots at the first pictures of this generation Impreza hatchback. The usual Subaru qualities of brilliant reliability, everyday practicality and a sense of camaraderie with fellow owners go some way to offsetting the dent in the income caused by the WRX STi's hefty ongoing running costs. Subaru has gambled on this car and the gamble looks to have paid off.Facts At A Glance CAR: Subaru Impreza WRX STi PRICE: £26,040 - on the road CO2 EMISSIONS: 243g/km INSURANCE GROUP: 20 PERFORMANCE: Max Speed 155mph / 0-60mph 4.8s FUEL CONSUMPTION: (urban) 20.5 / (extra urban) 34.4mpg / (combined) 27.4mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: front, side and curtain airbags / ABS / EBD / VDC WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height 4415/1795/1475mm

Subaru Justy 1.0 Twin Cam : NOT JUST ANOTHER JUSTY?

Car And Driving - In Twin Cam special edition guise, the Subaru Justy has extra attitude and the same low costs. Steve Walker reports. There was a time when you could direct the hard-up yoof of Britain towards a whole range of warmed-over superminis where they could get their automotive kicks without incurring crippling bills. Today, the cost of fuel, insurance and tax combined with the lofty prices of our increasingly salubrious mainstream superminis means that these sporty little numbers come at prices more in tune with the supermarket's middle management than its shelf stackers. So what's the young car buyer with a need for a fun car that won't make them the subject of Facebook ridicule to do? They may need to lower their expectations slightly but the answers are out there. Subaru's Justy 1.0 Twin Cam special edition is one.Buying and running a car is an expensive business for anyone but younger buyers without an overflowing parental cash machine to fall back on find it harder than most. It's particularly tricky if you're not just after any old car but something with a bit of attitude, maybe something that's fun to drive too. Cars matching that description aren't as common as they once were, especially in the sub £10,000 price bracket. You'll have to haggle like an Egyptian carpet salesman to get anything but the most basic mainstream supermini for that price so buyers looking for a little pizzazz tend to venture into less well charted areas of the market. It's here that they'll encounter Subaru's Justy Twin Cam. The Twin Cam branding sounds quite impressive, as if there have been modifications made under the bonnet to give this version extra poke in the manner of countless Subaru Impreza special editions. There haven't. It's the same 69bhp 1.0-litre engine as found in the standard Subaru Justy which had two camshafts to start with but that shouldn't put you off. The Justy's compact size and light weight mean the buzzy little 3-cylinder engine has no trouble punting it about, especially at the kinds of speeds you do around town. The 0-60mph sprint takes 13.6s, so pick your traffic light drag races carefully (preferably targeting vehicles towing trailers) but the Justy is actually very nippy up to 30mph or so. There's a claimed top speed of 99mph to be attempted away from the public roads."Only 100 Subaru Justy Twin Cam models will be made available in the UK"All the controls are legibly marked, the steering is light and the ride is surprisingly supple for a small car. The manual gearbox probably isn't as direct as it could be and the windscreen pillars can be intrusive when negotiating tight roundabouts but other than that, this is an extremely easy car to drive. The engine is vocal when you press it hard, as you'll need to in order to make swift progress. The gear lever also has a significant vibration running through it. Despite, or perhaps because of this, the Justy always feels puppyish and alert. So what is different about the Subaru Justy Twin Cam? It's a question that's only ever likely to be asked by people who haven't seen one yet. The car comes in either Black Mica or Shining Red paintwork with thick stripes down its flanks suggestively bearing the `Justy Twin Cam' legend and what Subaru refers to as a `Viper' stripe running right down the middle of the car over its bonnet and roof. This is a reference to the Dodge Viper which does indeed have a similar stripe but in automotive terms, that V10-engined supercar is just about the polar opposite of Subaru's Justy. Still, the stripes look good and so does the darkened rear privacy glass which is the desired effect. The Justy is basically a rebadged Daihatsu Sirion, not a bad thing by any means as Daihatsu really knows its small cars. There's certainly no shortage of headroom inside the Justy. Six footers should find no issues in either the front or the rear and legroom is also surprisingly good. It's even possible to adjust the rake of the rear backrest. Naturally this abundance of cabin space comes at a price and rear luggage space isn't the best. Like most modern compact cars, the Justy features a multitude of cup holders, stowage spaces, trays and cubbies. Rather surprisingly, the seats are firm and give good support, even to broad shouldered drivers. Materials quality inside the car is about five years behind the current class leaders. Only 100 Subaru Justy Twin Cam models will be made available in the UK - 50 in red and 50 in black. This will add even more exclusivity to a car that hasn't exactly flown out of the showrooms in its standard guise since being launched. To a base Justy specification that already includes remote central locking, a CD stereo with MP3 compatibility, air-conditioning, electric windows and 14" alloy wheels, the Twin Cam models add the stripes, a twin sports exhaust, a roof spoiler, a leather gear knob and branded floor mats. That's over £1,100 worth of extras but the Justy Twin Cam costs only £690 more than a standard model. That sounds like good business. The car has been designed to do well in pedestrian safety tests, the deformable bumper and nose cone section along with the ample space below the domed bonnet being a whole lot friendlier than many rivals. Front, side and curtain airbags are standard on all models, there are ISOFIX child seat fixings in the outer rear seats and a trio of three-point seat belts in the rear. Anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution are also included. The Justy certainly isn't going to send you to the wall in terms of ongoing running costs, the 1.0-litre petrol engine managing a combined total off 56.5 miles per gallon. Carbon dioxide emissions are pegged at a lowly 118g/km. which will put it onto the radars of canny urban buyers. Pricing is not overly competitive to begin with even on this Twin Cam model. The equipment list makes up for this in some respects but the Justy is still priced uncomfortably closely to the very good Mazda2. Expect to pay group 5 insurance premiums and costs per mile work out broadly on a par with something like a Ford Fiesta 1.25. Where the Justy might puzzle some buyers is that in many ways, it falls between what we'd expect from a citycar and what we'd see as a supermini. The Subaru Justy might have escaped your attention until now but the Twin Cam special edition model should go some way to rectifying that, particularly if you're looking for an affordable small car with a bit of character. Operating at the small end of the supermini sector, in many ways the Justy has more in common with the latest crop of smaller city cars. It's strong on economy, has lots of safety equipment and low insurance costs, all combined with a surprisingly lively driving experience. In Twin Cam form, there's added visual drama too, courtesy of those extrovert bodywork stripes. It's a package that won't be for everyone but those seeking a fun car on a tight budget will like it.Facts At A Glance CAR: Subaru Justy Twin Cam PRICE: £9,995 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 5 CO2 EMISSIONS: 118g/km PERFORMANCE: Max Speed 99mph / 0-60mph 13.6s FUEL CONSUMPTION: (combined) 56.5mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front, side and curtain airbags, ABS, EBD WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE ?: Length 3600mm/Width1665mm/Height1550mm
