KITT might have been able to jump at the touch of a button, but the General Lee was the car that started the craze. The bright orange, '01' door and rebel flag-roofed, painted Dodge Charger was the absolute star of the Dukes of Hazzard. A rollicking series of adventures, the Duke boys might have never 'done no harm' to themselves, but they destroyed just about every 1969 Dodge Charger in filming the series. Actually, that's not entirely true, but the show was certainly responsible for filling a few scrap yards full of the big American muscle car.
Quite what message the Dukes of Hazzard was giving us is questionable, the Duke boys spending most of their time running away from the law. Who cares though; the car was cool, even more so as it was a racecar with a roll cage, welded up doors and no windows. That meant the Duke boys had to slide in through the windows before heading off for an always tail-sliding, gravel-tracked adventure usually with a handy failed bridge or large pile of dirt to jump off near some roadworks. Throw in cousin Daisy in her short denim shorts and a white Jeep and you've got perfect television viewing for pre-pubescent boys in the '80s.
