Kahn ML350 CDI Brabus

What is it?

Bear with us here, as it could get confusing. It's a Mercedes-Benz ML-Class 350 CDI with AMG ML63 bumpers, some Kahn design visual and interior styling and a Brabus engine management system to boost the output of the 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine.

Is it any good?

It might be an unusual cocktail, but it's a good one. Sure, there's a new ML just months away, but this Kahn version still cuts it as a very convincing head turner on the road. The AMG front and rear bumpers help, but Kahn's choice of matte black finishing and soft white pearl paint combined with its trademark RS wheels make for a great looking ML.

The Brabus engine modifications are limited to a plug-in ECU, which boosts torque to 435lb.ft and power to 268bhp. That's all achieved without any increase in economy - something of a win-win for the buyer. On the road it manifests itself with greater urgency through the gears and easier cruising at speed. Overall, it's an impressive means of getting a quicker ML without any penalty at the pumps. Despite the massive 22-inch wheels, the ride's not overly compromised either, indeed the steering delivers greater alertness and feel.

Inside Kahn's changes are fairly obvious, the quilted red leather perhaps not to everyone's taste, but nicely executed nonetheless. You could always specify a less eye-catching hue too, as Kahn is able to trim your car exactly how you want it.

Should I call the bank manager?

Nearly £60,000 is a lot to pay for an ML350 CDI but the styling revisions, interior specification and enhancements to performance make it a more unique, personal proposition. If you're not sold on the looks of the forthcoming ML then this one should do just nicely.

Summary

It might mix AMG, Brabus and Kahn Design but the result is a cohesive and appealing whole. If it's your thing you'll need to be quick, as this is the last one Kahn has built, and the replacement ML arrives soon.
