Porsche has officially revealed the fastest and most expensive car in its history - a £720,000 model which is as green as a Ford Fiesta.

The Porsche 918 Spyder is a plug-in hybrid which combines supercar performance with supermini fuel consumption.

It is powered by a 4.6-litre V8 engine and two high-tech separate electric motors which develop a combined 880bhp.

This gives the German car maker’s halo model a 0-62mph time of 2.8 seconds, a 0-124mph time of 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 211mph.

Porsche says that because of its green technology, the convertible will emit just 79g/km of carbon dioxide and be capable of a staggering 85.6mpg.

This is identical fuel economy to a diesel Ford Fiesta.

However, the top-spec Porsche 918 will cost from £720,000 - which makes it ten times more expensive as the Porsche 911 and the same as 44 Fiestas.

It is the third 'green' hypercar which has been launched this year following the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1 as sports car manufactures herald a new world of engineering.

The car has been designed to be driven in five different settings depending on the environment, with the driver switching each mode via the steering wheel.

This ranges from full electric mode, known as ‘E-Power’, through to ‘Hot Lap’ for when you want to get the maximum performance from the two-seat supercar.

When driven in E-Power, the 918 Spyder has a range of 18 miles and a top speed of 93mph while emitting zero carbon dioxide.

The firm yesterday (Fri) said: 'The 918 Spyder embodies the essence of the Porsche idea.

'It combines pedigree motor racing technology with excellent everyday versatility, and maximum performance with minimum consumption.'
