Porsche Speedster on the way

While attending the recent international launch of the new Porsche 911 Turbo, Yahoo! Cars learned that the iconic Speedster name is due to return to the Porsche line-up on a new Boxster-based roadster.

Last used in the late eighties on a 911-based body, the Speedster name is evocative of the gorgeous Porsche 356 of the fifties. It should mean a weight reduction for the Boxster, along with a modest increase in power.

If the new version of the Boxster follows suit, we expect it to feature a lower, more steeply raked windscreen, a more basic fabric roof and interior and the characteristic 'double-hump' hood cover behind the seats.

It's also likely that the Speedster will be sold in limited numbers, with production beginning in time for sales in summer 2010. Given that many will find owners in the sunny states, we expect Porsche to unveil the roadster at the LA Auto Show in December.
