Goodwood Festival of Speed 2012: Historic racers

One of the big appeals of the Goodwood Festival of Speed is that you get to see racing cars that often spend the rest of their lives sitting in a museum or tucked up in someone’s heated garage. But better still, everyone of them gets blasted up the hill as fast as possible and against the clock – there’s no better way to experience these gems than in the white-heat of competition.

1981 Ford Capri Zakspeed

Built to trounce the BMWs in the German National Championship, the mighty Zakspeed Capris were based on the just-introduced MkIII road car. The huge wings gave the downforce to carry big cornering speeds but more remarkably it ran a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit based on the humble 1.3-litre found in the contemporary Escort. Despite this it pumped out 560bhp and took pole position in all 13 races in 1981.
